Lil Wayne ft. Drake - "Right Above It"

Watching an artist “come of age” is something somewhat new to me. At the age of 25, it seems like most, if not all of my favorite artists are years older than me and some of them have even passed away already. (Tupac Shakur, Bob Marley, and Proof from D-12… RIP) However, I’m intrigued with the fact that a select few artists who were my peers growing up are now coming of age right in front of my eyes.

It was 1999 and Cash Money Records was one of many record labels trying to make theirselves a staple in the Southern Rap Scene. One of Cash Money’s many attempts at scaling the large ladder of rap music success was the formation of the group “Hot Boyz” featuring BG, Turk, Juvenile, and a 17 year old rapper by the name of Lil’ Wayne.

For some reason, Lil’ Wayne was the only member of “The Hot Boyz” I really enjoyed listening to. Juvenile, BG, and Turk were just too platinum-grilled out for me and they seemed to be more influenced by making money, buying fancy cars, and partying with beautiful women, than actually looking at the rap game from the poetic point of view, the characteristic that fascinated me so much about the genre.

There was just something different about Wayne’s verses, he was essentially rapping about the same thing the other group members were, but his delivery wasn’t monotonous like theirs’, his rhymes weren’t elementary like Juvenile’s, and there was a certain passion you could almost feel every time he jumped on the mic.

There was a fire burning in this emcee’s eyes and he wasn’t going to let anybody put it out. Wayne eventually went on to sell over 2 million with his solo debut album “The Block Is Hot” and the rest is history, Lil’ Wayne is now an icon in the rap game, one of the most feared and respected rappers, his wordplay is epic and his freestyles are masterful.

Yes, occasionally he releases a corny track or two, “Prom Queen” and “Bad Girl,” come to mind, but he also releases classic albums like “Tha Carter 3,” and is one of the most talented lyricists of all time.

I feel the same way now about Drake as I did about Lil’ Wayne in the past, I just feel like for the time being, he’s still finding himself as an artist and has so much more to offer lyrically than he’s shown to date, offerings like “Paris Morton Music,” and his new cut with Lil Wayne himself “Right Above It“ prove his capability to story tell and throw in some creative metaphors.

On the other hand, I’m not too impressed with his overplayed and audotuned out “Over,” I know it was a hit single, but I was hoping for something less monotonous.

However, I understand club hits are needed to rake in sales in this day and age. Drake definitely has shown the potential on certain tracks, yet on others, he sticks to the money, fast cars, and materialistic aspects, when there is so much more he has to offer, he’s a great story teller, and the club bangers work for singles, but come on Drake give us some more!!!!!

I know you have it in you. I can’t wait for this young upcoming artist to progress in a positive direction, either that or become the new age Nelly. Either way, check out “Right Above It,” Lil’ Wayne ft. Drake, Wayne’s verses are nasty and Drake steps his game up. Enjoy!

With the new release of Blackberry 6.0 coming soon for the Torch and AT&T, all the other blackberry devices have been doing slight upgrades to keep up.

I personally will wait until the download is available for my Tour.

I do however like the fact there are new colors for the blackberry themes. I love the precision blue, but now there are red, yellow, green, black, orange and purple to go along with the original.

Thanks for the tip from http://www.pocketberry.com/

YG @ Belo

There was a lot of tooting and booting going on when Def Jam recording artist YG dropped by Belo night club to perform his hit Toot It And Boot It.

The crowd was amped and ready to sing along to YG's performance in which he did not disappoint.

Birthday Girl Melissa Green also celebrated her birthday in style when YG tooted and booted with her on stage.

The night made for a pretty eventful time as the sold out crowd interacted with Melissa and YG to set the party off.

E-40 @ 4th & B

Almost all of San Diego's rap community came out to 4th And B for a chance to perform an opening set before the legendary Bay Area ambassador/west coast rapper E-40 hit the stage.

The event stayed open until 4:ooam which meant obviously the headliner would not go on until way later in the night.

The good thing about E-40 going on later was that the party kept going after the California 2Am club deadline. So all the people that were ready to party after hours definitely got a treat.

DJ Birdy Bird and DJ Ironic took turns warming the crowd up between the performances and special guests Above The Law And Kokane did a special set for the late night crowd.

Main Flow w/ DJ Ironic @ Belly Up

Rapper Main Flow who has periodically been on an extended European tour, stopped through San Diego for an intimate concert opening up for Ludacris' Miller Genuine Draft sponsored tour at the Belly Up this past Saturday.

Ludacris and Mainflow performed in front of a Sold Out Solana Beach crowd. The opening act Main Flow had SSD's very own DJ Ironic DJing Main Flow's set as well as DJing for the warm up to Ludacris set.

This show had a lot of energy and both performers were in tip top shape leaving the crowd satisfied until the next time around.

8-9-10...Be Great And Do Something Epic!!

Today August 9, 2010 (8-9-10) is a once in a lifetime date, so I am instantly inspired to want to do something great.

In my search for greatness, I decided to surf the websites of great people.

My first stop led me to Diddy's blog. Of course there would be a new Nike ad for Michael Jordan entitled Maybe It's My Fault.

As you all may know, while I surf, edit and work on my computer, I have to listen to music, so I always skim through the new releases on Mondays.

While skimming through the new music and surfing the web, I picked Fat Joe to have the SSD stand out song of the week featuring R. Kelly called How Did We Get Here.

This is my I'm Focused song and this song should also serve as an inspiration to people wanting to accomplish their goals.

A lot of times we make mistakes and feel we can never begin, continue on with or complete our goals. I am here to say, this is the day to change that mentality and go be epic.

It starts with having a dream, not selling a dream or giving false hope to someone, but actually delivering through on a thought process by acting on your passion to want to be great.

If you have a goal, don't let anyone tell you can't do it. As R. Kelly sings, "How did we get here from the middle of no where?" It means, keep pushing forward, don't let negative energy hold you back and believe in yourself.

I think we should all find some sort of inspiration from this day.

When we look back in the past two years we should find inspiration, whether its by Drew Brees winning the Superbowl and being able to meet President Obama, or even President Obama becoming the first Black President.

Maybe you can gain inspiration from Diddy having a billboard in Times Square. Or maybe your inspiration could come from Michael Jordan becoming the greatest player in Basketball to now becoming an NBA team owner.

Or if you are human like all of us and make mistakes or become shunned upon for personal matters, then you may find inspiration from R. Kelly.

By seeing Kellz focus his energy on his music and leave the negavity behind, he has once again started to gain notoriety for what made him great, which is good music.

I feel that anyone deserves a second chance as long as they work hard and focus their energy in a positive matter.

The moral of this story is, everyone should find some inspiration from this day to become great!

Kanye West - Power (Official Video)

No one man should have all that power, unless they are talented, gifted and have God on their side, then honestly all things are possible.

If no one else believed in Kanye West, Kanye West believed in Kanye West and thats all the motivation he needed to succeed. What people don't realize is, when becoming an artist, you have to believe in yourself or you will never reach the promised land.

You can say what you want to about Kanye, but you have to admit he has the drive, determination, perseverance and confidence to be able to accomplish his goals.

The thing that I like most is that he was humble enough to admit he made a mistake, seek help and then come back more focused, determined and on track and in tune with what made him great, which is the great music.

The way I see it, we are all human and all make mistakes, but we also all deserve a second chance as long as we work hard to show and prove that we definitely deserve a second chance.

Personally, I feel Kanye is on the right track to becoming a better person and this new material shows the same.

The Game - Brake Lights hosted by Dj Skee (Mixtape)

It seems The Game has been laying low and for good reason. Personally, I had been reluctant on Game for a minute since he hasn't been dropping that heat like he has done in the past.

Honestly, I just wasn't sure how his new material would be after the not so decent reviews of Shake.

I'm always trying to erase the hype, so of course when I heard more than 5 people talking about Brake Lights, I finally had to see what the madness was about.

I can't lie, his new mixtape Brake Lights is true heat. I was skeptical but after the first 5 songs, I knew he had something good on his hands. It seems once again DJ Skee knows how to bring artists back into the spotlight correctly. What a good way to return.

Hopefully, he can keep the momentum up for his up coming album...The R.E.D. Album.

Anyway, thanks to http://www.chicagonow.com/ and XXL for the mixtape plug.

Eminem - The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna (Official Video)

Why is it that sometimes no matter how much certain things hurt us, we continue to come back to the same things over and over again? Almost like we like the way the alcohol bath stings the cut, it burns ohhhhh so good! Or does it?

Eminem tackles this dilemma with his new video called "The Way You Lie" featuring the vocal stylings of Rihanna.

www.vevo.com recently premiered the video for the world and of course I had to post the update here.

Opening Day Del Mar Races

As promised, Opening Day at the Del Mar Race Track was a fun-filled extravaganza. This year, A-List Television, SD Online Radio and Limo Kings, teamed up to take on the race track.

We started out in a Limo sponsored by Limo Kings, got dropped off at the races and thanks to Eric Edwards of A-List Televison and Dale Siebert of SD Online Radio we had an inside track to Opening Day.

Through Eric and Dale's connections we were able to see the inside operations of the track that most people never see. Due to regulations I can't really show the pictures but it was a fun time.

I also had a great time because I got a chance to invite my Dad out for his birthday. I think he had the time of his life and at the end of the night held up like a trooper. Anyone that can't hang with me even for one day deserves a standing ovation. I'm glad he had a good day.

As always, I can't wait until next year for Opening Day, the photo opportunities are amazing.
